How to setup Atrim Door Sensor

Atrim Door Sensor is a Z-Wave sensor used to monitor the opening and closing of objects, such as drawers, doors, and windows. It utilises the Gen8, 800 series Z-Wave wireless communication standard. To see whether it is known to be compatible with your Z-Wave system, please reference our Z-Wave software comparison.

Installation with hub

To set up Atrim Door sensor and connect it to your Z-Wave hub:

  1. Detach your sensor's Bottom Cover moving it in the direction of the debossed arrow.
  2. Remove the plastic tab which blocks battery connectivity. Your sensor's LED will cycle through multiple colours twice and then turn off.
  3. Move your sensor to be physically within 3 metres / 10 feet or less of your Z-Wave hub. This is only temporary and will help your sensor and hub establish a secure connexion.
  4. Connect your sensor to your hub:
    • If your hub is running Home Assistant, dedicated instructions are avalable at 'Connect Door Sensor to Home Assistant'.
    • If your hub's app supports Z-Wave SmartStart QR code scanning:
      1. Activate the app's SmartStart scanner.
      2. Scan the SmartStart QR code upon Atrim Door Sensor.
Your sensor will now connect to the Z-Wave network and hub automatically.
    • If the app does not support SmartStart QR code scanning but the hub's software does support manually entering SmartStart codes:
      1. Enter the software's 'add device' via SmartStart feature.
      2. Enter the alpha-numeric string located under the QR code into your software's interface.
Your sensor will now connect to the Z-Wave network and hub automatically.
    • If none of the above options are available with your system:
      1. Set your hub into its ‘add device' mode.
      2. Press and hold Atrim Door Sensor's Tamper Switch. While still holding, press its Action Button 3 times within 1.5 seconds. Release both buttons.
      3. When your sensor successfully connects to your hub its LED will flash green 5 times. Should it not, repeat the above steps and contact us for further help if needed.

Atrim Door Sensor is now a part of your home automation system. You can configure it and its automations through your hub's software; please refer to the system's user guide for precise instructions.

It's now time to physically install your sensor.

Physical installation

Atrim Door Sensor should be installed upon the edge of 2 parts of a moving object, such as a door or window, where they separate. In this way, when the 2 parts of the monitored object separate, such as a door moving away from its door frame, the 2 parts of Atrim Door Sensor also separate.

For optimal installation:

  • It must be installed so that its 2 main parts separate when the door is opened.
  • It must be installed so that its 2 main parts come together, with a gap of no more than 15mm / 0.6” between the 2 parts, when the door is closed.
  • It should not be mounted on a metal frame as this may impact the magnetic sensor or Z-Wave communication signals.
  • The 2 notches should align when closed for optimal sensor performance.
  • If installing upon a door, avoid installation on the side of the door which has the hinges.

z-wave door sensor installation methods

z-wave door sensor installation methods

Diagram of installation methods showing the 1 correct method and 3 incorrect methods.

  1. Correctly placed on the 2 separating parts of a door and its frame with a gap no greater than 15mm / 0.6” between the 2 parts of Atrim Door Sensor.
  2. Incorrectly placed with the 2 notches upon the sensor not aligned with each other.
  3. Both parts of Atrim Door Sensor installed upon the door and do not separate when door is opened.
  4. Installed with a gap greater than the maximum 15mm / 0.6” space allowed between the 2 parts of Atrim Door Sensor.

Using the above best-practices, determine an installation location for your Atrim Door Sensor. We recommend testing your sensor at the selected installation location prior to completing a permanent installation using screws. To do this, temporarily mount it to your chosen object utilising double-sided tape. After a period of successful operation proceed to affix Atrim Door Sensor using the provided screws if so desired. Installation using screws is not required and most users will utilise double-sided tape only.

Waking Atrim Door Sensor

Battery-powered Z-Wave products need to be active (awake) in order to receive new configurations from a Z-Wave hub. Atrim Door Sensor wakes automatically and periodically in order to optimise its battery life, however, you can also manually wake it for immediate configuration changes.

  1. Separate the front of Atrim Door Sensor's larger part from its Bottom Cover.
  2. Press and hold the Action Button for 3 seconds. The LED will flash once indicating your sensor has woken up.
  3. When done, re-affix the front of your sensor to its Bottom Cover.

Your sensor will automatically return to battery-saving mode (sleep) after 10 seconds.

Disconnect from Z-Wave network

If you wish to remove Atrim Door Sensor from your automation system, follow your system's interface for excluding Z-Wave products.

  1. Separate the front of Atrim Door Sensor's larger part from its Bottom Cover.
  2. Set your system's software to its device removal mode.
  3. Press and hold Tamper Switch. While still holding, press Action Button 3 times within 1.5 seconds. Release both buttons.
  4. When your sensor has been successfully disconnected from the system, its LED will flash red 5 times.

Factory reset

If Atrim Door Sensor is already connected to your automation system, only perform these steps should the standard removal procedure, as described above, fail or should your system be otherwise inoperable. Factory resetting Atrim Door Sensor while it is still connected to a system will result in a phantom version of your sensor appearing within your system which cannot then be removed or otherwise altered.

  1. Ensure sensor is powered on.
  2. Remove Bottom Cover.
  3. Press and hold Action Button for 12 seconds and then release.
  4. The LED will flash an alternating pattern of red and green colours for 5 seconds if the factory reset was successful.

Changing batteries

  1. Separate the front of Atrim Door Sensor's larger part from its Bottom Cover.
  2. Insert two, new, non-rechargeable AAA batteries.
  3. Re-affix the front of your sensor to its Bottom Cover.
